The Rhetoric Department houses both the Speaking Center (in EPB on the 4th floor--follow the signs) and the Conversation Center. Select the appropriate Center from the drop-down menu.
The Speaking Center, housed on the 4th Floor of EPB (in rooms 408, 410, 412, and 414) and in 605 and 611 Seashore (SSH), offers quality, one-on-one and small group tutoring and consultation to students and instructors on campus who would like to work on any aspect of oral communication. Our instructors are trained ESL and Rhetoric instructors. We work with a range of students from many disciplines on such issues as: effective participation in class discussions, crafting and delivering oral presentations, understanding unfamiliar cultural references, interview skills, creative performances, and speech anxiety. We also work with instructors on: crafting clear assignments, fostering classroom presence, ensuring that all students can access their reading assignments, going on the job market, and delivering poster and conference presentations.
The Conversation Center, which meets in various campus libraries (see maps on our homepage), helps undergraduate students develop intercultural awareness and communication skills by working with other undergraduates. Through programming such as the Intercultural Conversation Hour and our Conversation Partners Program, students build confidence and cultural fluency with the English language; with informal, “low-stakes” verbal interactions; and with other cultures. The Conversation Center opens this year on September 10.
